Under the influence of Shan Shui poetry, Chinese landscape painting developed into an independent art form in the late Tang Dynasty. Chinese landscape painting is not really comparable to Western landscape painting, which reflects the visible world before the eye. It is rather created through the artist's sensibility of life and imagination of nature scenery. The monochromatic ink and wash landscape art is the highest form of Chinese painting. Unlike the other two categories of figure painting and flower and bird painting, ShanShui painting is all-encompassing. The creation of a landscape painting requires besides inspiration also understanding of the real structure of natural motives and objects.
