The name Tanhua (曇花) stems from the Udumbara flower (優曇缽羅花) in Buddhism. According to legend, the Udumbara blooms only once every three thousand years. As a metaphor, it implies that listening to the true teachings of Buddha is rare and difficult. In real life, Epiphyllum oxypetalum blooms for only a few hours on summer nights. This elegant white flower is large, impressive, and very frarant. Therefore, it bears another wonderful name: "Queen of the Night".
