This grand freehand (Da xieyi) painting depicts the Tanhua (Epiphyllum oxypetalum) in full bloom under a full moon. The Gatha poem was composed to reflect the wisdom of the Diamond Sutra and written in cursive script, serving as inspiration of the painting.
Everything we can see, like the moon, the blooming flower, or the buds, arises from a gathering of causes and conditions. It is a fleeting moment, flowing just like the movement of brushstrokes on paper. True awakening lies within our own hearts in the peaceful, quiet, empty, pure state.
月非月, 從何來? 花非花, 何處去? 無從來, 無所去。月下對花, 悟佛語。一盞清茗, 清心地。曰月曰花, 緣起聚。筆墨紙上, 隨心起。
